Can store employees buy movies before their release date?

Scarlet asked:

For example, say a movie is released on Tuesday in a store, could the store employees buy the movie on Monday(or whenever the movie supply arrives for that matter)? I’m assuming the new release movies are shipped to stores like Walmart, Target, Kmart, and the like, a few days before they’re due to be released.
So, anybody ever worked in one of those stores or does anyone know if a person could do that? I’ve wondered this for a while.

they’re are not allowed to. even though they are shipped in advance to the store and they have it. it would be illegal for them to buy it. they would get caught because they would know if it gets rung up.
i used to work retail and employees didn’t know so they bought them. but no one got in trouble.
its not worth it by getting it a few days before the release date.
some licensing agreement that the movie companies have about video being released on tuesday and movies in theater’s releasing on fridays akg

    Legally? No.
    Does it happen anyway? Yes.

Stores break release dates all the time. They’re not supposed to, but it does happen a lot. When something comes in that is supposed to go out on the shelves, some managers will hold back a few of them for employees who wanted to purchase it, thus ensuring that they won’t sell out before the people who work there get the chance to get their own copy. No. I don’t know about other places but I worked @ Target for over a year & they’d let us set aside a movie (book, dvd, wii) to purchase before customers- but on the release date. Rae
