How should I store my family pictures?

What kind of cd’s(cd-r, cd-rw, dvd) store pics best? 1000 of them. I also have some short videos. I’ve never copied anything onto a disc,drive, etc. I have a 2g flash drive I could use. I use a Kodak Easy Share with the software that came with it. Will another cpu have to have Kodak software to open it? Do I need to format everything a certain way before storing it? I may not have the same cpu and software in the future. Please help.
