What is the best way to store trading cards?

I have an 8 yr old stepson who has 1600+ Yu Gi Oh cards and they are a mess all over the house. What is the best way to store these? I thought about getting binders and those clear vinyl sheets that hold 9 cards, but was told those damage the cards and make it difficult for him to play with them.

What are some (easy and inexpensive) ways to store his cards that will protect the cards, make them accessible for him to play, and most importantly, keep them put up?
