What do you call a store that is under the sidewalk in some cities?

I was just in a city that had stores below sidewalk level. Like you could see all the stores at sidewalk level, but you could either go into the stores or outside there was a flight of steps leading down to a store that was below sidewalk level (not actually under the sidewalk, just below ground). There has got to be a name for this. Does anyone know what they’re called?
