With all the talk of preparing for emergencies, how can I safely store a supply of cat food?

canned food, you just follow the recommendations for storage on the cans label

dry food, you can store in an airtight plastic container with one of those lids that snap on

or you can use one of those “space bags” the kind you fill up, then vacum all the air out of it, those will keep the food fresh forever!

depends on what preservatives were used in the food

Tocopherols only preserve food for 1 year.. but are WAY safer than BHT and BHA…

here is a link and there is a bit of info on different preseravtives in dry food

i have a freezer in the garage, i put parrot food in zip bags, i suppose you can freeze dry pet for future use. I don’t think it really freezes just the bad bacteria and most freezes ‘to death’. i live in New jersey, everything is affected by the humidity so the refrig or freezer is the only answer to long term storage. Sometimes I get a good price and buy more than I will use quickly.

A plastic tub… Like for toys or whatever, get one of those with a lid! They work great!

if you have dry cat food put it in a bucket and it wont get stale or get insects in it
