Scared of Lonely asked:

I have had three store bought parakeets for years and I was wondering if store bought birds are able to reproduce. I am for certain we have two females and a male. If they are able to how do we get them to begin mating.

They are able to, but they will both have to be at least nine months old to mate. donghee k

They need to be between 12 months old and 4 years of age to safly raise chicks.

If you want them to mate, you need to do lots and lots of research and get your setup just right.

Here’s some quick advice to add to what the second poster said:

    1. Have a breeding box attached to the bottom of the cage, and make it easily accessible (large enough for 2 birds). This box should be a normal everyday part of their environment.
    2. Cover the cage at night. This will increase the probability of them breeding (sort of like getting under the covers).
    3. To facilitate egg production, offer the female protein and calcium rich food. Instead of making your own formula, I’d go to the pet store and buy bird food specifically designed for female birds that will be laying eggs. Archaeopteryx

    Hi,
Yeah as long as you have males and females then they will. I guess by parakeets you mean budgies? Firstly you will need another male as the females will fight over the single male. Then you need to separate the pairs, otherwise if the hens get jealous they will eat eggs and kill chicks.

You need a nest box a standard budgie box is fine, it needs a concave in the bottom. Attach it to the cage and fill with a layer of wood shavings about 1inch deep. The hen is likely to remove most of the shavings but that is normal and helps her get into breeding mode. The birds need supplements such as cuttlefish, grit, iodine.

You need the budgies to be in breeding condition before they will breed, the hen has to have a dark crusty brown cere it will look like dry blood and some people mistake it for blood. The male will have a bright blue cere and will become more active, chatting and jumping around, he will also take more interest in the hen.

Well, you cant be for sure if they are male or female. They are at a year mature but you need to make sure there gender is what yo think it is.

Males the cere where there nostrils are will be blue
    Females wil be brownish color

You cant mke them mate its all on them. All are able to reproduce you need to wait a while they usally take a long time for them to mate.
