Is there a company that is contracted by grocery stores to remove outdated grocery items?
Robert C asked:
I always wonder what happens to the seasonal items like holiday themed foods and packaging. There always seems to be an over abundance on the displays and shelves, but after the holiday the item mysteriously disappaers. Is there a company that provides this service?

No. What they do is mark the items down the day after the holiday. Go to Wal-Mart December 26 and stock up on cheap Christmas paper, candy and other themed items for at least 50% off. The regular employees take care of the mark downs and restocking with normal items. frozen339
When I worked for a grocery store, most items were just put on clearance. Some may have been sent back to the warehouse for next year, permitted we had enough to bother storing them for the next year.
Some companies also use a Christmas slip-cover for their products. Some chocolates come with a Christmas-themed cover that can be removed to reveal the original packaging, allowing the store to continue selling it overpriced without losing money on product markdown once the holiday is over. All they have to do is remove the slip and reshelve it.
I’m sure things are also donated to charities or giving to stores that liquidate any overstock. It depends on the store. Rhia
