What is the best way to store quilts without an extra bed to lay them on?

TY asked:

I’ve heard the best way to store quilts is to lay them out on an extra bed in a spare bedroom but I don’t have one. What is the next best way to store quilts? I have about 8 or 10 and they are thick so only about two fit in the plastic tubs and I don’t have room for all those tubs either. Thanks.

The reason it’s recommended to store quilts flat (or essentially flat) on a bed is because folding the quilt puts stress on the fabric. A hundred years from now, quilts that have been folded and stuffed in a plastic box will be extremely damaged along the folds. Although rolling quilts avoids the fold, it just isn’t practical for most people. Displaying the quilts on a quilt rack is fine, although you should remove and refold them occasionally, and keep them out of the sunlight because that degrades the fabric, too. If you need to store them in a closet or under a bed, and this is a quilt that you want to preserve for a very long time, invest in some acid-free tissue paper. Bunch the paper up into a tube and put that in the folds, so the fabric isn’t folded so tight that it creases. Inexpensive cotton pillowcases are a great way to store quilts. Plastic is the worst thing for storing fabric long term – it emits chemicals (think about the smell when you open a new plastic container), and it holds in moisture, which can rot fabric. Paper boxes are okay IF they are acid free and archival safe. Cotton pillowcases are flexible, breathable, and will protect the quilt from most things.
